Balloons Used to Contraband Cigarettes Shut Down Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
