Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Shaped our Modern World
There are numerous contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that title should go to the automated timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around ten sawyers laboring over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber could be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical cutter, which converted logs into planks with almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic and cultural dominance in the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s initial true industrial machine.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. A single part converted its rotary motion to up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement advancing the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the wood forward a measured step each stroke.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine these parts so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing with each downward motion while moving on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental components.”
